英国ロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院で19日に執り行われたエリザベス女王の国葬に、天皇、皇后両陛下はマスクをせずに参列された。新型コロナウイルス対策を徹底するため、国内での行事などにはマスクをつけて参加するのがこれまでの陛下のスタイルだった。ただ、英国ではすでに「ノーマスク」が定着し、ほかの参列者もマスクを着用しないことが想定されたため、今回の判断となったとみられる。

　陛下は日本時間の17日午前に政府専用機で羽田空港から出発。羽田空港では白色のマスクをつけていたが、ロンドンに到着した際、マスクは黒色に変わっていた。

　黒色マスクについて宮内庁関係者は「英女王の夫フィリップ殿下の葬儀を参考にしたのでは」と推測する。殿下が亡くなったのは2021年4月のことで、英国でもマスク着用が強く求められた時期だった。葬儀では参列者は黒色マスクをしていた。

　一方、白色マスクは海外では「病人」のイメージが強いことに配慮したとの声もあった。

　両陛下は空港から宿泊先のロンドンのホテル「クラリッジズ」に到着した際も黒色マスクをつけていた。

　ただ、18日午後に行われたチャールズ国王主催のレセプションと、女王のひつぎに拝礼する「正装安置」では、マスクを外して臨む陛下の姿があった。新型コロナの感染拡大以降、大勢の人が集まる行事などで陛下がマスクを外すのは初めてのことだった。

　実際、ロンドンではマスクをしている人を見かけることはほとんどなく、日本との温度差は大きい。

　クラリッジズでは両陛下が出入りする際、従業員はマスクをつけて応対していた。両陛下を警護する現地の警備関係者も同様だ。宮内庁があらかじめ、ホテルなどに両陛下のマスク着用を伝えていたことを受けての対応とみられる。

　しかし、陛下がホテルから出てしまうと、いずれも一斉にマスクを外す姿がみられた。「やれやれ」という仕草をしながらマスクをしまう従業員もいた。

　英国と日本では感染状況が大きく異なるため、両陛下は今後も国内では当面、マスクを着用するとみられる。

　宮内庁関係者は「国葬では、両陛下だけマスクをすることで他の参列者と違う印象を与えることは避けたかった。今後もコロナ対策を徹底する」と話した。

LONDON — Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the state funeral for the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II, held at London’s Westminster Abbey on Sept. 19, without wearing masks.

The Imperial Couple have been wearing masks to domestic events as a coronavirus infection countermeasure. It is believed that the latest decision was made because going maskless has become common in Britain, and other funeral attendees were not expected to wear them.

The couple were in white masks when they departed Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on a Japanese government plane on the morning of Sept. 17, and they were seen wearing black ones when they arrived in London. The Imperial Couple were also in black masks when they arrived at Claridge’s hotel in London, where they would stay.

Regarding the black masks, a source affiliated with Japan’s Imperial Household Agency said, “Perhaps they referred to the funeral of the Queen’s husband Prince Philip.” Around the time the prince passed away in April 2021, people in Britain were still strongly advised to wear masks, and funeral attendees were seen in black masks. Sources also speculated that the Emperor and Empress went with the black face coverings because white masks are strongly associated with illness abroad.

During a reception held by King Charles III and at the Queen’s lying in state on the afternoon of Sept. 18, however, Emperor Naruhito was seen not wearing a mask. It was the first time that the Emperor had been seen without a mask at a large gathering since the start of the pandemic.

Unlike in Japan, very few people in London still wear masks.

At Claridge’s, employees were wearing masks when the Imperial Couple came in and out. So were local security guards for the couple. This is thought to be due to the Imperial Household Agency having told the hotel and others on the British side that the couple would wear masks.

However, employees removed their masks as soon as the couple left the hotel.

As the infection situations are very different in Britain and Japan, it is believed that the Imperial Couple will keep donning masks in their home country for the time being.

A source close to the Imperial Household Agency commented, “We wanted to avoid giving the impression that the Imperial Couple are different from other attendees at the state funeral by wearing masks. We’ll keep taking thorough measures against the coronavirus.”
