Today on March 11th, Japan marks 14 years since a devastating earthquake and tsunami rocked the country’s northeast and triggered a nuclear crisis, leading to the deaths of over 22.000.
In this context, artist MORITA Hiroaki 森田 浩彰 is actually showing, as my art historical relevant, analytical criteria, a new masterpiece called “Time / Quake (Mar.11, 2011 – June 3, 2024)” at the gallery AOYAMA | MEGURO. Japanese earthquake disasters over a 13-year period (Mar.11, 2011 – June 3, 2024) are reproduced in time sequence and compressed into 24 hours.
This work leaves you speechless. Flashbacks. Dark memories. The room teaches you to experience and rethink humility and awe.
A digital clock-shaped lighting installation suspended from the ceiling reproduces the tremors of earthquakes according to their recorded times.
The reverent silence makes way for the power of nature, i.e. Mother Earth.
Accompanying the lighting are earthquake lists detailing epicenters, dates, and magnitudes, as well as individual seismic events represented through symbolic letter-cut signs. These elements allow viewers to engage with the layered phenomenon of earthquakes both materially and symbolically.
Morita’s exceptional creativity and artistic maturity are shown here in an excellent way. In my opinion, Morita’s artwork “Time / Quake (Mar. 11, 2011 – June 3, 2024)” will go down in Japanese art history.
