I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes, I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black, With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away, Like a new born baby it just happens every day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black, I see my red door, I must have it painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts, It’s not easy facin’ up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue, I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin’ sun, My love will laugh with me before the mornin’ comes

再モダン・窮地的フォーマリズムに壮大な美しさを制作した画家五月女哲平さん。ブラックイズノットイコールブラック。色彩感覚や色の調和が良くて、長くて複雑な手順。多色像のモノトナス黒画。面白く立体化させたキャンバスに隠れているフリュイドにはまる。好きなマットペインティングであり、微妙な黒の色合いで素晴らしく考えさせる合成。ある意味、アート・プラクティスを通じて時代精神への反射色。

“Painting and…” curated by KURAYA Mika 蔵屋美香, chief curator of the Department of Fine Arts at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, began last week at the gallery αM and will show five artists in the context of their actual art practices as painters.

Yesterday’s visit to the gallery reconfirmed my criterion on SOUTOME’s formalistic strategy, which emphasizes aesthetic as well as intellectual pleasure. One of the most intriguing aspects was SOUTOME’s chosen materiality, implying an interestingly vague indeterminacy. Instead of concentrating on flatness and the painterly process, like in his former works on canvas, this time, double, tripple “framings” as imperatives transcend into a literary form. The compositions ultimately function as an imaginary process, wanted to be de-coded by the viewer’s art historical knowledge and personal perspective. We are intrigued to find out why black is not black.
