鳥山明 TORIYAMA Akira
1978年に『週刊少年ジャンプ』52号にて読み切り作品『ワンダーアイランド』でデビュー。集英社との専属契約下で『週刊少年ジャンプ』などジャンプ系列誌に作品を発表。代表作『Dr.スランプ』『ドラゴンボール』はいずれもテレビアニメ化され、1981年から1999年にかけてフジテレビ系列の毎週水曜日19時 – 19時30分は『Dr.スランプ アラレちゃん』から始まり、『ドラゴンボール』『ドラゴンボールZ』『ドラゴンボールGT』『ドクタースランプ』と、長期に渡り鳥山原作のアニメが放映されていた。 漫画家としての活動の合間にデザイナーとしても活動し、『ドラゴンクエストシリーズ』などのゲームやマスコットのキャラクターデザイン、プラモデルや車などのデザインを多数手掛けている。漫画家デビュー以来、地元で活動を行っており、Dr.スランプ単行本の描きおろしページによると、当時は名古屋飛行場（小牧空港）から航空便で東京に原稿を送っていた。 1980年から1990年代の『（週刊少年）ジャンプ』の全盛期を支えた立役者であり、当時編集長を務めた西村繁男は、「『週刊少年ジャンプ』発行部数600万部達成の快挙は、鳥山明の破壊的なパワーを借りて初めて実現し得たことは、誰も否定できないだろう」と評価している。 『Dr.スランプ』と『ドラゴンボール』は2024年の現在でも、コマーシャルに起用されたり、グッズが作られるなど根強い人気を博している。 Akira Toriyama (Japanese: 鳥山 明, Hepburn: Toriyama Akira, April 5, 1955 – March 1, 2024) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama is regarded as one of the authors who changed the history of manga, as his works are highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered to be one of the main reasons for the period when manga circulation was at its highest in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball’s anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime’s popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
