Shiota Chiharu: The Soul Trembles

English PR text:
quote:

This will be the largest-ever solo exhibition by Shiota Chiharu. The subtitle “The Soul Trembles” references the artist’s earnest hope to deliver to others soul-trembling experiences derived from nameless emotions. While Shiota’s dynamic and immersive installations consisting of threads strung across entire gallery spaces are particularly well-known, this will be the first opportunity to experience in detail twenty-five years of Shiota’s oeuvre; primarily in six large installations, plus sculptural works, video footage of performances, photographs, drawings, performing arts-related material, etc. Through this exhibition epitomizing the “presence in absence” that Shiota has explored throughout her career, visitors will doubtless gain a sense for themselves of the meaning of living and journey of life, and the inner workings of the soul.

Hallo Chiharu,
herzliche Grüße aus Tokyo nach Berlin.

With great joy I took notice of the news that SHIOTA Chiharu’s largest-ever solo exhibition “The Soul Trembles” at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo closed its curtain with an amazing number of 666.000 visitors.
May I take therefore the opportunity to focus on the beginning of this historical, and by KATAOKA Mami well curated, exhibition. The evolutionary process in Shiota’s artistic practice had been superbly introduced in a bi-lingual, semi-academic context (read the original captions, which are attached below the pics).
My former review, written 6 years ago, mainly showed actual works by Shiota (+ later up-dated). Please notice the tragic, cancer-related, emotional and physical instability of Shiota, endured in the past years; – “sensitive”, “precarious” works executed in 2019 (+ beforehand discussed with the curator).
This extraordinary exhibition will be touring in the Asia-Pacific region, beginning next month in Busan, South Korea. Continuing at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (Australia),  The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) (Indonesia) and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Taiwan).

Untitled” 1992 This work was made when Shiota was a first-year at Kyoto Seika University and became the last oil painting she would make. “As I was handling these materials with an entire history behind them, this oil pigment and canvas, I became no longer able to endure the frivolity with which I was painting.”
Becoming Painting” 1994.
Becoming Painting” 1994. (at Australian National University School of Art, Canberra) “… an act of liberation. This was the first artwork that was not a refined, polished art piece, but rather an act of bodily expression that I had thrown my entire self into.”
SHIOTA Chiharu “Congregation” 1997
SHIOTA Chiharu “Congregation” 1997. “… cow jawbones that symbolize death are arranged in a circular formation as if they were seeking life and drinking water. Shiota then held a performance with herself in the center, in which she seemed to be seeking life surrounded by muddy water – a gesture that resembled the act of returning to the earth.”
Try and Go Home” 1997 (France).
Try and Go Home” 1997 (France). “After four days of fasting, undertaken as part of a workshop by Abramovic, one of the words that fell out of Shiota’s mouth was “Japan”. The performance that she gave the following day consisted of clambering up a cave that had been carved into a sloping face, falling down, and then climbing up again….”
SHIOTA Chiharu “Bathroom” 1999 (Berlin).
SHIOTA Chiharu “Bathroom” 1999 (Berlin). Shiota expressed “the memory of her skin, which cannot be entirely wiped away even after washing, “ while covering herself with mud in her own bathtub. In the third year after she started living in Germany, Shiota became sharply aware of her own skin, arguably a symbol of her own identity.

SHIOTA Chiharu “Wall” 2010.
SHIOTA Chiharu “Wall” 2010. While taking photos on the theme of walls, including the Berlin Wall and the Wailing Wall in Israel, Shiota became interested in the walls stipulated by her own blood. Likening the borders surrounding family, ethnicity, nation, and religion that are associated with blood to walls, she expressed the “existence of humans who are unable to overcome these walls.” In these images, the externalized blood vessels intertwine with the body, while the soundtrack symbolizes the sound made by the heart of a fetus. This work is a condensation of many things, including Shiota’s own experiences of illness, pregnancy, abortion, and birth.
