日本芸術院会館 Japanese Art Academy, Headquarters
日本芸術院会館は，会員の故・吉田五十八（昭和29年1月会員就任，39年11月文化勲章受章，49年3月死去）の設計により昭和33年に竣工しました。 この建物は「平安朝時代の優雅，典麗の雰囲気を主調として，弘仁，藤原の面影を彷彿させ，さらにこれを近代の時代感覚によって，現代の姿に移行せしめることを意図した。従って建物は平屋建を選び，これに配するに平安朝特有の中庭をもってし，さらにこの周囲に廻廊をめぐらして，平安朝を端的にしかも強力に表現したつもりである」（吉田五十八）とされています。 会館は，会員の会議・懇談や日本芸術院授賞式などに使われるほか，展示室では日本芸術院所蔵の美術作品を一般に公開（不定期）しています。 平成15年9月，（社）日本建築学会によって，日本芸術院会館が歴史的に価値が高く，技術の成果がデザインに反映されているとして，「日本におけるモダン・ムーブメントの建築100選」に選ばれました。 The Headquarters of the Japan Art Academy were built in 1958 under the design of the late Isoya Yoshida (attained membership to the Japan Art Academy in January 1954, received the Order of Culture in November 1964, died March 1974), member of the Japan Art Academy. Isoya Yoshida remarked that the building “was intended to emphasize the refined and elegant qualities of the Heian Period, while resembling the visages of the Kouin and Fujiwara eras, which would transition to a contemporary form through modern sensibilities. Therefore, a single-story building was selected, and a courtyard typical of the Heian Period was installed encircled with a cloister that was intended to directly and powerfully communicate the Heian Period influence.” The Headquarters is used for meetings and discussions among the members and as the venue for the Japan Art Academy Prize Ceremony, and serves to display (on an irregular basis) the Japan Art Academy’s collection of fine arts to the general public in the exhibition room.
