Mesmerizing “Our Planet – Earth & Stars” solo show by Japanese-Swiss artist IKEMURA Leiko イケムラレイコ in the National Art Center, Tokyo. Impeccable in exhibition design, atmosphere lighting, wall color with an intelligently executed subtle concept of letting the visitor walking around like on moving clouds, with no fixed page for the ending of this fantastic novel.
Ikemura’s creative perspective of her ‘Weltanschauung’, her contemplation of the universe indicate a well articulated poetry, interwoven with an unconscious attitude towards artistic practice we call ‘cause’, with the associated idea of pro-active feminine power.
Her sensing, bridging the East and West, looking for the personal knowledge in time and habitat, symbolize her crucial role as a master of arts, a pioneer for other Japanese female artists.
The exhibition’s conceptual framework gives the viewer the opportunity to wander around, being fascinated by the 16 different themes and elements, the sensory effects of pure visual experience depicts Ikemura’s capacity of capturing the ephemeral moment.
Creating landscape paintings at a monumental scale. Transforming the zoomorphic figurine into anti-Beuys kafkaesque metamorphosis. For spiritual seekers Ikemura’s animistic cosmos, in fusing some philosophical aspects of the East with the West, becomes form.
This mind-blowing exhibition will tour to the Kunstmuseum Basel, starting timely on the 11th of May, with the beginning of the Venice Biennale in Italy, where the hordes of world wide collectors, curators and art lovers will later invade Switzerland for ART BASEL and the Zürich museums and galleries’ top shows. In this sense, I am very excited how a different curatorial practice will function at the Kunstmuseum Basel with “Nach Neuen Meeren”. See you then during ART BASEL.

* Poetry will be read by Leiko Ikemura and guest readers Harumi Kawaguchi (Poet) and Mika Tsuboi (Actress).
* Readers and contents will differ for each reading sessions.
* Each reading session will be approx. 15 minutes long. Readings will be in Japanese only.
* Admission is free but an exhibition ticket for this exhibition is required (discounted tickets accepted).
* Time and content may change without prior notice.
Leiko Ikemura has also been eagerly creating poetry and numerous of her poems are displayed throughout the venue. On the day of the event the artist herself and guest-readers will recite some of Ikemura’s poems in the exhibition gallery. Take the chance to enjoy Ikemura’s world with your eyes, ears, and whole self!
On the day of the event, please refer to the information-panel at the entrance of the Special Exhibition Gallery 1E for details about the sections where the reading will be recited, etc.

The sculpture “Usagi Kannon II”, well over three meters in height, is exhibited together with the video “Nowhere”. The monumentally scaled sculpture, a hybrid of a rabbit and the goddess Kannon, the Bodhisattva of compassion, was created after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 when Ikemura was recovering from shock at the event and beginning to work again. This image of sorrow and mercy is installed with prayers for those affected by the unprecedented disaster. The hollow interior is just like a womb, inviting the injured inside to be healed, its entrance facing the viewer.

有機と無機　Organic and Inorganic
In the late 1980s Ikemura began working with clay, and sculpture went on to become one of her main media along with painting and drawing. While kneading clay and shaping its indefinite masses by hand, she searched for images, and people, animals, and organisms that defy identification emerged. Meanwhile, the house has been an obsession of Ikemura’s since childhood, a presence she viewed as a living thing, imbuing the inorganic structure with organic qualities. The title of ‘House-Woman’, one half of a humorous husband-and-wife pair, is a literal translation of the German ‘Hausfrau’ (housewife), an example of Ikemura’s frequent use of wordplay.

In the 2010’s, Ikemura began producing landscape paintings at a monumental scale, conveying an animistic worldview in the East Asian tradition. When painting these, Iemura says she places a canvas on the floor and works on it from above, literally getting inside the painting and figuratively entering the landscape. She sensitively incorporates the effects of change, and captures images that well up spontaneously to create dreamlike landscapes conveying the living presence of human beings and animals.

　彼女は幼い頃から両親の子ではないという疎外感に悩む。「どこにも属さない」異邦人意識の無所属の人。こういう人は宿命的に運命に導かれるという因子を持つ人である。
　天涯孤独を妄想する幼い心と絵心を持つのは僕と同じだが、僕は彼女のように読書家でもなく外国語も話せない。故郷を後に、海外に居場所を求めるボヘミアン気質も全く持ち合わせていない。そんな僕は本書を伴侶として、彼女の後をつきまとうようにスペインからスイス、ドイツへと移動しながらアクチュアルな美術の巣窟に著者と潜り込むことで彼女の内面をそっと覗かせてもらうのである。
　そして彼女の絵筆に触れながら、彼女の創作体験を味わうのだった。彼女の展覧会の成功も一緒になって歓んだりするのである。
　彼女がドイツのケルンを本拠地にペインターとしてデビューした１９８０年頃は、僕が画家に転向した時期と一致する。ワイルドペインティングがヨーロッパを席巻したころで、本書に挙げられるドイツの売れっ子画家たちの作品展もヨーロッパで観て知っている。当時、若いスターアーティストが輩出したけれど、今ではその名も聞かなくなったって本当？
　彼女は時代の先端を駆けるアーティストと距離を置いたために、その潮流と共に流されることはなかった。そんな彼女と親和する僕も彼女に共鳴せざるを得ない。彼女は個展の成功にもかかわらず、そうした成功よりも人間性がよりよく発展している人たちに共感を覚えたのだろう。そして俗世を離れてスイスの山に籠もり、自然に囲まれて「アートのエゴの世界から解放」されていった。
　そんな場所で「この世にいながら、あの世を見ている」ような両界感覚を覚えていくのである。そして「言葉で伝えられないことを絵に」して、未知の世界と故郷を繋げたい想いを抱きながら、自己を見つめようとする。
