東京のANOMALYがオープン！ Tokyo’s ANOMALY is open!

Hours ago, the new gallery “ANOMALY” opened to Grand Fanfare! The redesigned entire 4th floor of the Terrada Art Complex is managed by the owners of the former three galleries, YAMAMOTO GENDAI, URANO and Hashimoto Art Office.
As a consequence, spacewise ANOMALY tops all other contemporary art galleries in Japan.
Quote from the press release: “the space utilizes the different areas to embrace all artistic creations – the expanded exhibition floor to facilitate multi-purposed programs of all scales, and a lounge adjoining the spacious office to welcome artists and collaborators at any time to meet and co-work on a project basis.”

Let’s celebrate (see attached snapshots) the vivid spirit of Tokyo’s art scene via this inaugurating exhibition by Chim↑Pom’s eclectic, artistic practices, – this time based on a unique, mesmerizing “urban theory” from their own distinctive perspective!
(Interestingly, art critic SAWARAGI Noi’s “Anomaly” exhibition, which other visitors and me saw in 1992, was one of the reflecting discourses today, too.)

ANOMALY オープンにあたって
極東に位置する日本・東京、2018年。

現在求められているギャラリーの役割とはなにか、形骸化したディスカッションや机上の空論を繰り返さずに、なにをすればその役割の一端を担えるかを、断続的に考えてきました。90年代のギャラリーの黎明期は過ぎ、現代美術の成熟期の逆説的な停滞ムードなのか、アートフェアや企画展など国際的な現場に出ていっても起こることは想像の範疇、また、国内も美術館での規制や自粛が強くなり、それぞれの役割の限界も感じる昨今です。

欧米から輸入されたギャラリーのシステムを踏襲するだけでなく、アジアや日本の現代美術のあり方にフィットするかたちで、変則的な姿をみせることはできないか。
10年以上のキャリアを持つ3つのギャラリー、山本現代・URANO・ハシモトアートオフィスが、それぞれの個性を活かし「スイミー」のようにユナイトすれば、もっと力強くなり、よりインディペンデントで自由な活動ができるのではないか。経済的なユナイトだけでは面白くないので、個々のギャラリーの枠組みを取り払い、大きな家族になって、新しいかたちのギャラリーを立ち上げたらどうか。

チャレンジしやすくフレキシブルな大小のギャラリー空間、プロジェクトごとに様々な人が気軽に出入りし滞在できるオフィスとラウンジなど、「場」があると楽しい。
リサーチや対話を行い、展覧会以外にもトークセッション、パフォーマンスの企画を組んだり、時代の要請に向き合ってみる。
日々、小さな変化が起き続けて、既存のギャラリーの枠に収まらない、文化的で豊かな土壌をつくれたらいいと思います。

新しいギャラリーの実現のために繰り返してきた1年以上に及ぶディスカッションは、いつも笑いに満ち溢れていました。
そしてオープンの準備が整った今、とても良い兆しを感じています。

ギャラリー名は「ANOMALY」（アノマリー）。
ANOMALYとは、正論や常識では説明不可能な事象や個体、変則や逸脱を表す言葉です。

あらゆるチャレンジは、みなさまのご寛容とご協力なくしてはできません。
どうぞご支援ご鞭撻のほど、よろしくお願い申し上げます。
