ドナルド・キーンと三島由紀夫、運命論の関係性 Donald Keene and Yukio Mishima, a fatalistic relationship

Today we said a final goodbye to famed literature expert Donald Keene at his public funeral, conducted in Buddhist-style 仏教, the social norm in Japan. Directly under Keene’s photograph, in the center, – the envelope for condolence donation 祭粢料 (Saishiryo) by the Japanese Emperor (Tenno-heika) 天皇陛下 had been prominently exhibited. In this context I bowed in front of the ceremonial envelope of the Tenno 天皇, the highest authority of the SHINTO 神道 religion. A strange feeling, as I wanted to bow in front of Donald Keene and not the Japanese Emperor. One important, crucial experience to understand the Tenno’s role in contemporary Japan.

I had the opportunity in meeting highly respected Mr. Keene on several occasions, one was in 1990, during the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, where my anthology about Contemporary Japanese Literature (Momentaufnahmen moderner japanischer Literatur 現代日本文学, 34 novelists, from IBUSE Masuji 井伏鱒二 to YOSHIMOTO Banana 吉本ばなな) had been promoted by my German publisher.

At that time I realized a kind of generational gap between Mr. Keene and me. He probably noticed, that my new book surpassed his work. He never showed interest towards novelists like SATA Ineko 佐多稲子, NOMA Hiroshi 野間宏, NAKAGAMI Kenji 中上健次, TSUSHIMA Yuko 津島佑子, MURAKAMI Ryu 村上龍, MURAKAMI Haruki 村上春樹 or SHIMADA Masahiko 島田雅彦.

With profound interest I later read about Keene’s influence (involving betrayal of trust) on MISHIMA Yukio 三島由紀夫, who shockingly ‘lost’ against his early mentor KAWABATA Yasunari 川端康成 regarding the Nobel Prize in Literature.

三島由紀夫は「潮騒」や「金閣寺」などで、物語の転換となる場面に海を印象的に用いてきたが、遺作となった「豊饒（ほうじょう）の海」の第２巻「奔馬」では、その役割を山に担わせた。大和国一之宮、大神（おおみわ）神社（奈良県桜井市）のご神体、三輪山である。昭和４１年８月、三島は友人の日本文学研究者、ドナルド・キーンとともに神社に３泊し、三輪山に登った。

「様々な意見や批評がある中で、結果的に川端がどのような評価を受けて受賞に到ったかを、幾つかの視点から考察したが、公開された物の内最新資料(1963 年)からアカデミーは、「日本文学の専門家」2名に日本文学に対する評価を依頼していたことが分かった。その2名とは、ドナルド・キーン教授(ニューヨークコロンビア大学╱日本語学科教授)と、エドワード・サイデンステッカー氏 (三島╱川端文学の翻訳者)であった。」

“He was an extraordinary person,” says Keene, who knew Mishima well. They had met, symbolically enough, outside Tokyo’s Kabuki-za theatre in 1954, and had gone to see plays together. Keene had translated one of Mishima’s modern Noh plays.
“He died, as you know, at the age of 45, leaving at least 45 stacked volumes of novels, plays, criticism, poetry.” Mishima slit his belly after leading a failed, and farcical, coup to restore the emperor’s power but Keene thinks he committed suicide because he was passed over for the Nobel Prize. During the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Mishima had written Keene a letter with the line, “I envy the athletes who know if they are first, second or third.” Keene says: “That was all he said but I knew exactly what he meant.”

Today’s Literati at the public memorial probably remembered the crucial, ‘deadly’ relationship between Mishima and Keene as well.
In 2008, Keene became the first foreigner to receive the Order of Culture 文化勲章受章 from the Japanese government, in recognition of his contribution to literature. Therefore the envelope for condolence donation 祭粢料 (Saishiryo) by the Japanese Emperor (Tenno-heika) 天皇陛下.

「地震や津波、原発事故があっても日本人が落ち着いていたことに感心しました。日本人が好きです。日本人として死にたい」
そう言って、日本人になった日本文学の研究者、ドナルド・キーンさんには伝えたいことがありました。生涯にわたって日本を愛したキーンさんの秘めたメッセージです。

ドナルド・キーンさんは東日本大震災の翌年の2012年、日本に移住し、日本国籍を取得。「鬼怒鳴門」（キーン・ドナルド）という漢字の名前も披露、日本人になりました。震災と原発事故で苦しんでいた日本人を勇気づけました。

ところが日本国籍取得には別の側面もあったことが、今回、イノウエ教授の証言で分かりました。

キーンさんはイノウエ教授に、外国人としてではなく、日本人として内側から意見することで覚悟を持ってメッセージを伝えたかったと打ち明けていたといいます。

イノウエ教授：「キーンさんはずっと日本のよいところを語ってきたわけなんですけれども、いまになって、もう少し、悪いところも言わなければならないけれど、アメリカ人として言うのはつらくて、できないと。愛する日本を外国人として批判するのではなく、日本人として苦言を呈したかったんです」

しかし…。

「あなたが言うように、もっと伝わるようにやれればよいのだけど、私が懸念しているのは、日本人は私がいかに日本を愛しているかを語ったときしか、耳を傾けてくれないことだ」（2014年１月14日）

「キーンさんは日本が平和であるために、日本人は日本文学をもっと真剣にとらえないといけないと何度も話していました。日本人が何者であるのか、どこから来たのか、心情を理解するのに文学作品を読まないといけないが、若い人があまり本を読まないのを悲しんでいました。キーンさんは自分のキャリアを作ってくれた日本の人たちに心から感謝していたし、日本への批判も深い愛から来るものでした」

日本人として責任を持って意見をする、その覚悟を持って、日本国籍を取ったというドナルド・キーンさん。その覚悟、そこまでして伝えたかったことに私たちは応えられているだろうか、取材中、何度も考えさせられました。

最後にキーンさんがつづっていたメールから２つ、言葉を紹介します。

「自虐的な日本人に“なぜ日本のような国に人生をささげるのか”と聞かれるが、心から、“日本の人々がいるからだ”と答える」（2014年２月26日）

「立場や考え方が違っても、話せば何か解決策に到達することができるはずだ」（2014年１月25日）
