One of my favourite artists in Japan passed away yesterday at the age of 72, FUNAKOSHI Katsura 舟越桂. Very sad news.
In 1992 I could visit his tiny garage-like atelier, full of good memories.
Through my encounter with sculptor SATO Churyo 佐藤忠良, I learned a lot about his colleague FUNAKOSHI Yasutake 舟越保武, who’s sculptural works are Christian-related.
After father Yasutake died in February 2002, his son Katsura started to create erotic sculptures. At that time I proclaimed, that Katsura somehow felt finally liberated, as he was constantly under the close observance and influence of his father.
FUNAKOSHI Katsura, may you rest in peace.
