In response to:
Writing on social media, Trump said on Saturday that he would impose tariffs on the UK, Denmark and other European countries.
Here’s a reminder of what he said:
• From 1 February 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland will be charged “a 10% Tariff on any and all goods” sent to the US, with the tariff raised to 25% on 1 June
• The new import taxes will “be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland”
• Trump says the US has “subsidised” Denmark, the EU and others “for many years” and says it is “time for Denmark to give back”
• “World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it,” he says, adding no one other than the US “can play in this game”
• Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland “have journeyed to Greenland for purposes unknown” and are playing a “very dangerous game”
• “Strong measures” must be taken so that this “potentially perilous situation end quickly and without question”, Trump adds
• He also references the “Golden Dome” defence system, which he says “can only work at its maximum potential and efficiency… if this Land is included in it”

France’s President Macron calls for the EU to activate its “most potent trade weapon” against the US after President Trump’s tariff threat over Greenland.
Macron is now calling for the use of the EU’s “anti-coercion instrument.”
If used against the US, it would restrict US access to the EU market, potentially blocking US banks from EU procurement and targeting US tech giants.
This trade weapon has never been used before.

Let’s clarify something.
The United States does not “pay for NATO”.
The US maintains a global military presence of its own, of which European defence is just one part.
Yes, the US spends more on defence than the other NATO members combined, but only a fraction of that spending is allocated to NATO and European security. It amounts to about 10–15% of the full US defence budget, so equivalent to around $100–120 billion per year, and yes, that’s an extremely important contribution.
I’ve long argued for serious increases in UK defence spending and we must do far more, but let’s get the facts right. The UK and European members of NATO currently outspend the US on Europe’s defence by a factor of roughly 3:1. Also. European NATO defence spending is rising rapidly.
So, the claim that the US “pays for NATO” is highly misleading.
