KATAOKA Mami, the current director of the Mori Art Museum, insisted on the publication of a printed catalog for the 21st Sydney Biennale (2018), which she curated.
Yesterday, MOMAT, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, announced that it would not print a catalog for its special exhibition, “A Collection of Documentation on Opening Documents, Weaving Memories: A Special Exhibition Featuring Works from the Museum Collection.” This is a scandalous situation!

東京国立近代美術館による戦争画展の公式記録が紙ではなくウェブ図録として公開されたが、残念ながらキュレーターによる論考も大風呂敷を広げたわりに、絵画や芸術の本質論には踏み入れていない。（たとえば1940年代リアリズム論争の域ですらない）
戦争画にまつわる周縁記録をまとめているだけで、80年以上経過したことによる蓄積的分析が皆無で読み物としてはなはだ物足りない。このこと自体が我が国の芸術観美術観そのままの浅薄さと芸術の本質論に対する一般的興味のなさを露呈してるともいえよう。
まず、国近サイドが展示の際パネルで自己規定しているにもかかわらず、今回の論考では「戦争画」「戦争記録画」「作戦記録画」という名詞がばらばらの定義で使用されていて読んでいて混乱してしまう。この混乱が近美側の位置づけの混乱と同義なのだろう。
近美の展示自体も世界基準の美術館というよりも博物館的であって、戦争画は本来「戦争博物館」に安置されるべきものであり近代美術としての文脈からは大きくはずれているので混乱は加速される。

The official record of The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo’s exhibition on War Paintings has been published not as a printed catalog but as a web catalog; unfortunately, despite the curator’s grand claims, the accompanying essays fail to delve into the essence of painting or art itself. (They do not even reach the level of the 1940s Realism Debate.)
The text merely compiles peripheral records related to War Paintings, offering no cumulative analysis despite the passage of more than 80 years, and is thus extremely unsatisfying as reading material. This fact alone could be said to expose the very superficiality of Japan’s view of art and the general lack of interest in the essence of art.
First, despite The National Museum of Modern Art defining its own framework on exhibition panels, the essays in this publication use the terms “War Paintings,” “War Documentary Paintings,” and “Operational Documentary Paintings” with inconsistent definitions, causing confusion for the reader. This confusion likely mirrors the museum’s own confusion regarding how to position these works.
The MOMAT exhibition itself feels more like being in a “science museum” than in a world-class art museum; since War Paintings should inherently be housed in a “War Museum” and are far removed from the context of Modern Art, this confusion is only exacerbated.
