Today’s “Top Ten List 2025” marks the introduction of a new selection criterion.
It is based on my personal perception as a Japanese artist and trendsetter. In Japan, I am not seen as a German artist, but as a Japanese one.

本日発表する「トップ10リスト2025」は、新たな選考基準を導入したものです。これは、日本のアーティストでありトレンドセッターでもある私自身の認識に基づいています。日本では、私はドイツのアーティストとしてではなく、日本のアーティストとして見なされています。

The current issue of the art magazine Bijutsu Techo 美術手帖　(BT), April 2026 vol.78 no.1109, titled “Immigration and America: Artists of the Japanese Diaspora, Past and Present,” presents a distorted and questionable definition of Japanese contemporary artists living abroad.

美術雑誌『美術手帖』（BT）の2026年4月号（第78巻第1109号）は、英語のタイトルとして “Immigration and America: Artists of the Japanese Diaspora, Past and Present” （翻訳：「移民とアメリカ：日本のディアスポラ・アーティストたち、過去と現在」）、日本語のタイトルとして「移民とアメリカ：日系アーティストの歴史と現在」と題し、海外在住の日本の現代アーティストたちについて、歪曲され、疑問の余地のある定義を提示しています。

The use of the term “diaspora” suggests a victim mentality/victim syndrome to the reader, referring to people living in “exile”. Bijutsu Techo (BT) supports the dubious claim that people born in Japan can forever be called Japanese artists. This is deliberate, misleading journalism on the part of the art magazine.

「ディアスポラ」という用語の使用は、読者に「亡命」生活を送る人々を指す、被害者意識／被害者症候群を連想させます。美術手帖（BT）は、日本で生まれた人々は永遠に日本人アーティストと呼べるという疑わしい主張を支持しています。これは同誌による意図的で誤解を招くジャーナリズムです。

To overemphasize and legitimize such statements, giving them excessive meaning and authority in this current art magazine like American Ei Arakawa-Nash (born 1977 in Iwaki), trying to stifle critical discussions, is a sycophantic attitude. It can be assumed that the artistic practices in America (vita) of the following artists, KUSAMA Yayoi 草間彌生, HIRAKAWA Noritoshi 平川典俊, KUBOTA Shigeko 久保田成子, NOGUCHI Isamu 野口勇, SASAMOTO Aki 笹本晃, ONO Yoko 小野洋子, SHINOHARA Ushio 篠原有司男, SHINOHARA Noriko 篠原乃り子, a.o., did not fit the “journalistic” concept.
Japanese artists living abroad do not participate in the Japanese Social Contract. They do NOT pay taxes in Japan and do NOT pay social security contributions.
Let me list what those Japanese living abroad, do NOT pay in Tokyo (Japan), unlike me as a German: income tax 所得税, Tokyo metropolitan resident tax 都民税, ward resident tax 区民税, health insurance premiums 健康保険料, long-term care insurance premiums 介護保険料, national pension premiums 国民年金料. (Simplified explanation; there is more)
Each of these artists embraces an anti-diasporic work-life balance/concept. They are strong and determined to live in their newly chosen center of life—the place of their global income—and to pay taxes, health insurance, and pension contributions there.

このような発言を過度に強調し、正当化して、本誌のような現代美術雑誌において（1977年いわき市生まれの）アメリカ人荒川ナッシュ医のように、それらに過剰な意味や権威を与え、批判的な議論を封じ込めようとするのは、おべっか使いのような態度です。
以下のアーティストたち――草間彌生、平川典俊、久保田成子、野口勇、笹本晃、小野洋子、篠原有司男、篠原乃り子らによるアメリカでのアーティスティック・プラクティス（ヴィータ）は、「ジャーナリスティック」な概念に合致しなかったと推測されます。
海外在住の日本のアーティストは、日本の社会契約 (Japanese Social Contract)に参加していません。彼らは日本で税金を納めておらず、社会保険料も支払っていません。 ドイツ人である私とは異なり、海外在住の日本人たちが東京（日本）で支払っていないものを挙げてみよう：所得税、都民税、区民税、健康保険料、介護保険料、国民年金料。（簡略化した説明；他にもあります）
これらのアーティストたちは皆、アンチ・ダイアスポリック的なワーク・ライフ・バランス／概念を掲げています。彼らは、自ら選んだ新たな生活の拠点――つまり、世界的な収入を得ている場所――に住み、そこで税金、健康保険料、年金保険料を支払うという強い決意を持っています。

With that in mind, I have removed the following artists from the ‘Top 10 list’:
こうしたことを踏まえ、以下のアーティストたちを「トップ10リスト」から除外しました：

I consider this paradigm shift in the selection criteria appropriate and in line with the spirit of the times (Zeitgeist). Anyone who disagrees is welcome to express their constructive criticism via social media platforms like Facebook, X, or Instagram. We all thrive on dialogue and discourse.
Finally, for today: I do not want to rule out the possibility that I may adjust the parameters of the selection criteria in the coming years. My cards are on the table.

この選考基準におけるパラダイムシフトは適切であり、時代の精神 (Zeitgeist) にも沿ったものだと考えています。これに異議がある方は、Facebook、X、Instagramなどのソーシャルメディアを通じて、建設的なご意見をぜひお寄せください。私たちは皆、対話と議論を通じて成長するものです。
最後に、本日お伝えしたいこととして：今後数年のうちに、選考基準のパラメータを調整する可能性も排除したくありません。私の考えはすべて明かしています。
