Japanese galleries are under extreme stress 2

I feel that, for some reason, a provocative needle prick is necessary at this particular juncture. I can say, that Japanese galleries no longer exert any influence over the artistic practices or careers of artists in Japan. The causal links may be varied, but every gallery owner (art dealer) has their own personal backstory. As the number of artists doubles every year – even within the international art scene – I notice that Japanese galleries and their staff are overwhelmed, under extreme stress. Since the large, eclectic installation artworks cannot be exhibited in the ‘white cube’, artists are considering other exhibition options. Artists can establish contact with institutions on their own. They do not need a gallery owner for this.

SUGIMOTO Hiroshi, SENJU Hiroshi, and YAMASHITA Yuji — these are cultural figures who aspire to the status of “Person of Cultural Merit.” In doing so, they rely upon the catchphrase “Japanese aesthetics.” Conservative figures within the Japanese art world are currently gaining momentum. As someone who has introduced contemporary Japanese literature to audiences abroad—working alongside 34 novelists of *junbungaku* (pure literature)—and who is also a Japanese oil painter, Japan’s leading contemporary art blogger, and the founder of the “Japan Contemporary Art Transparency Prize” (JCATP)—an initiative that has left its mark on the history of Japanese art—I am well-positioned to evaluate and pass judgment on the current state of the Japanese art scene. Japanese galleries currently find themselves in a precarious situation: they must either become more professional or fade into oblivion. Three galleries from abroad are demonstrating—with great commitment—which way the wind is blowing. Artists / art workers need to have a thick skin, as their exhibitions are occasionally met with scathing reviews in art magazines. Japanese gallery owners, however, are unaccustomed to such criticism; they tend to be easily piqued—possessing, in effect, a very thin skin. As a veteran Japanese artist, I have gained a fairly comprehensive overview of the Japanese art scene. In this context, I am presenting—for the first time—a “Top 10” list of Japanese galleries, published here on ART+CULTURE. This follows the spirit and tradition of the “Top 10” lists that highlight internationally successful Japanese artists.
