Yayoi Kusama passed away on August 14th. More than two months have now elapsed. Neither the Yayoi Kusama Memorial Art Foundation nor the OTA FINE ARTS Gallery website has published any information or news regarding the Farewell Gathering / Memorial Service「O Wakare No Kai お別れの会」.

日本における「お別れの会」は、通常、故人が亡くなってから2週間から2ヶ月の間に行われます。中でも、仏教の四十九日法要の前に行えるよう、死後40日以内を目安に開催されるケースが最も一般的です。
開催日に関する厳格な宗教的・法的な決まりはありませんが、どのような形式で行うか、またイベント自体の所要時間はどの程度かによって、時期の目安が異なります。
開催時期について
• 全体的な流れ：人が亡くなった直後、まずは近親者のみで小規模な葬儀や火葬（密葬や家族葬）が行われます。その後、友人や同僚、知人などが故人を偲ぶ場として「お別れの会」が催されます。
• 企業主催か個人主催か：企業が主催する「社葬」などの場合は、準備期間を確保する必要があるため、死後1〜2ヶ月後に行われるのが一般的です。一方、友人などが主催する個人的な集まりの場合は、それより早い2〜3週間後に行われることもあります。
An お別れの会 (Owakare no kai / Memorial Service) in Japan is typically held 2 weeks to 2 months after the person passes away, with the most common timeframe being within 40 days so it occurs before the 49th-day Buddhist memorial ritual (Shijuninichi).

When It Takes Place
• The Overall Timeline: Immediately following a death, families usually hold a small, private funeral and cremation (Missou or Kazokusou) for close relatives within the first few days. The Owakare no kai is organized later for friends, coworkers, and acquaintances to pay their respects.
• Corporate vs. Private: If it is a corporate memorial service (Shasou), it is almost always held 1 to 2 months post-death to allow the company sufficient time to organize logistics. Private or casual gatherings arranged by friends might happen sooner, around 2 to 3 weeks after.
