With great fanfare our beloved Tokyo’s Museum of Contemporary Art 東京都現代美術館 re-opened! What a joy!
LED lighting, solar panels, earthquake resistance modernization, children friendly facilities, eco-, SDG-oriented projects had been realized through renovation works. And much much more!
Highly motivated curators like YABUMAE Tomoko 藪前知子 and NISHIKAWA Mihoko 西川美穂子 put up two incredibly fascinating opening exhibitions: “Weavers of Worlds - A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern/Contemporary Art” and “MOT Collection: Pleased to Meet You. New Acquisitions in Recent Years”.

“Weavers of Worlds” surveys Japanese art history from 1910s to 2010s through works mainly from its own collection. Admirable research by digging deeply into the archives, re-contextualizing the re-discoveries. Erudite and clear-eyed curatorial practice by taking a discerning critical perspective.
In its narrative on modern and contemporary Japanese art, the exhibition does not situate the artists in the context of a static view of history, on the contrary, as a counterpoint, it focuses on the artist’s singularity, with eclectic, radical art practice in mind.
This exhibition leads the Japanese viewer and art educator into self-reflection, also because it examines the old-fashioned art education via ‘Nitten’ and ‘Inten’, which should be abolished as quick as possible.
Being a contemporary artist means to live a very long life where everything is changing. Continuously. Every ‘valuable’ art (seen through the specialist’s eye) is in a flow, is in the now and will later disappear, therefore has to be archived by a museum like MOT.
This very challenging task had been excellently completed by curator Nishikawa with “New Acquisitions in Recent Years”. The exhibition spotlights works created in the 2010s, which projects a real contemporary feeling, the constellations give a fascinating answer. ‘Chapeau’ to the risk taking attitude; people familiar with MOT’s collection and those viewing it for the first time will be able to enjoy fresh encounters with each of the works. This museum’s Grand Reopening unveils earlier collected works that have undergone restoration, too. An exciting paradise of artistry, opened up for everyone who loves contemporary art! BRAVO!!!

Painted at the height of his career, “Nurse” is a dazzling masterpiece — a celebration of the bold new imagery that changed the direction of art. Taking his heroine from the pages of a 1963 popular romance comic and permeating her with his unique style, Lichtenstein produces an image full of intrigue and complexity. With its vibrant colors, strong lines and Ben-Day dots, “Nurse” joins a distinguished group of icons who take their place in the history of figurative painting.
