A radio station has parted ways with a host who bagged the first interview with Joe Biden after his CNN debate – because she used “pre-determined” questions sent by the White House.
Andrea Lawful-Sanders, former host of ‘The Source’ on Philadelphia’s WURD 96.1 FM, sat down with the President on Wednesday.
And on Saturday she revealed the eight questions used in the interview had been provided by Biden’s team.
Joe Biden calls himself a ‘proud black woman’ in latest gaffe for president
In a statement about her exit from the station, WURD Radio CEO Sara Lomax said: “The interview featured pre-determined questions provided by the White House, which violates our practice of remaining an independent media outlet accountable to our listeners.
“As a result, Ms. Lawful-Sanders and WURD Radio have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately.”
Lomax continued: “WURD Radio has cultivated that trust with our audience over our 20-year history. This is something we take very seriously. Agreeing to a pre-determined set of questions jeopardizes that trust.
“Black media has a long history of advocating for the interests of the Black community.
“This practice of de-legitimizing Black voices continues today. WURD Radio is not a mouthpiece for the Biden or any other administration.”
Despite the controversial pre-arranged interview questions, it was another interview to forget for Biden who is facing intensifying pressure to stand down.

Andrea Lawful-Sanders, WURD Radio part ways after she used questions provided by Biden’s campaign
By Tom Ignudo July 7, 2024 / 8:56 PM EDT
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Philadelphia radio host who said she used questions prepared by President Biden’s campaign in a post-debate interview parted ways with WURD, the station’s president and CEO announced on Sunday.

Andrea Lawful-Sanders, who hosted “The Source” on WURD 96.1 FM/900 AM, in Philadelphia, mutually parted ways with the radio station after she said on CNN that she received a list of eight questions from Mr. Biden’s campaign, including four that she approved.

“WURD Radio remains an independent voice that our audience can trust will hold elected officials accountable,” Sara M. Lomax, the president and CEO of WURD, said in a statement on Sunday. “As Pennsylvania’s only independent Black-owned talk radio station, WURD Radio has cultivated that trust with our audience over our 20-year history. This is something we take very seriously. Agreeing to a pre-determined set of questions jeopardizes that trust and is not a practice that WURD Radio engages in or endorses as a matter of practice or official policy.”

After Mr. Biden’s poor debate performance last month against former President Donald Trump, he did two interviews with Black radio shows in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania — two states critical to his chances of winning the 2024 general election. In both, his campaign provided approved questions to two radio hosts, including Lawful-Sanders.

Biden campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt told CBS News in a statement Saturday afternoon that “it’s not at all an uncommon practice for interviewees to share topics they would prefer,” calling the questions “relevant to news of the day.”

Lomax said in a statement on Sunday that the interview with Mr. Biden was “arranged and negotiated independently” by Lawful-Sanders “without knowledge, consultation or collaboration with WURD management.”

“WURD Radio is not a mouthpiece for the Biden or any other Administration,” Lomax said. “Internally, we will commit to reviewing our policies, procedures, and practices to reinforce WURD’s independence and trust with our listeners. But mainstream media should do its own introspection to explore how they have lost the trust of so many Americans, Black Americans chief among them.”

A Biden administration official told CBS News Saturday that the White House was not involved in any preparation for the two radio interviews. The official added that providing questions to interviewers is not standard practice for the White House, and the campaign is not planning to do it again going forward.

Since the debate, Mr. Biden has faced questions about if he should stay in the presidential race. He met with 20 Democratic governors last week at the White House to shore up support.

On Sunday, Mr. Biden was in Philadelphia and said during a speech at Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ that his goal is to “unite America again.”

After his Philly stop, he traveled to Harrisburg with First Lady Jill Biden to meet with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and attend an event at a local union hall.

Biden Campaign Has Long Fed Softball Questions to Friendly Interviewers
A review of President Biden’s interviews shows he is often asked the same few questions in interviews. It’s not a coincidence.

A few days before his State of the Union address in March, President Biden called in to “Afternoon Vibes,” a popular radio show in Charlotte, N.C. The host, Jessica Williams, asked him if he would list his accomplishments, say why he had decided to run for a second term and explain what was at stake for Black voters in the election.
That same day, Mr. Biden called into “DeDe in the Morning” in Dallas, where he was asked if he would list his accomplishments, say why he had decided to run for a second term and explain what was at stake for Black voters in the election.
Nine days later, the president called into a third show, this time in Milwaukee. “What do you think is at stake in this election for Black Americans specifically?” the host, Michelle Bryant, asked.
A close look at more than two dozen radio and podcast interviews given by Mr. Biden over the past two years reveals a distinct pattern: In appearance after appearance, the president has been served up nearly identical questions, prescreened or suggested ahead of time by campaign staff members. And in nearly every case, the questions set the president up to deliver on-message talking points, without notable flubs.
The review sheds light on a tactic the Biden campaign has used liberally to control the president’s interactions in public, one that appears to have accelerated as the election has approached. Mr. Biden has given fewer interviews with news outlets than any modern president, and many of those have been with friendly interviewers, rather than journalists, who take questions and talking points from the campaign.
Mr. Biden is far from the only politician to dodge the scrutiny of traditional news media or to try to game interviews to avoid awkward moments. But his reliance on a protective bubble has taken on new importance in the wake of his fumbling debate performance last month, a disastrous live question-and-answer session that sent his party into a panic over whether he is up to the task of defeating former President Donald J. Trump.
