13. Aug (Reuters) – Der russische Präsident Wladimir Putin hat Medienberichten zufolge am Donnerstag die von Japan beanspruchte Kurilen-Insel Iturup besucht. Es war der staatlichen russischen Nachrichtenagentur Tass zufolge Putins erste persönliche Reise zu der Inselgruppe. Zuvor hatte er Marineübungen im Fernen Osten Russlands beaufsichtigt. Russland und Japan haben nie einen formellen Friedensvertrag zur Beendigung des Zweiten Weltkriegs unterzeichnet. Das Haupthindernis dafür ist der ungelöste Streit um die Inselgruppe, die in Japan als Nördliche Territorien bezeichnet wird. Japan erklärte, es protestiere aufs Schärfste gegen Putins Besuch.
Außenminister Toshimitsu Motegi schrieb auf X, die nördlichen Gebiete einschließlich Iturup seien historisch und völkerrechtlich ureigenes japanisches Territorium. Iturup liegt am südlichen Ende der Kurilen nahe der japanischen Insel Hokkaido. Die Inselkette erstreckt sich im Nordosten bis zur russischen Halbinsel Kamtschatka.

母方の祖父がサハリンや千島列島で石炭掘りや漁師をやっていたりしたので、たぶん自分は一般的な日本人よりそこら辺のニュースを逃さないようにしているのだと思う。そしてまたサハリンを訪れたい気持ちが大きくなっている。このままではもう行けなくなってしまう・・・。
サハリン先住民ニブフ族の老夫婦は元気にしているだろうか。お祭りの日で民族衣装を着ていたアイドルグループみたいな女の子たちはまだみんな仲良しなのだろうか・・・（みんなが持ってる木の棒は、その棒自体を合わせて叩く楽器です。この時はヒッチハイクでサハリンレスリング協会の人が郊外のお祭りに連れて行ってくれました。自分が出会ったサハリンの人たちはみんな親切で優しかったです。）
My maternal grandfather worked in coal mining and as a fisherman in Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, so I think that’s probably why I’m more inclined than the average Japanese person to keep up with news from that region. Russia conducts missile test off Japan-claimed islands amid deepening row
MOSCOW (Kyodo, August 21, 2026) — Russia’s Pacific Fleet said Thursday it has conducted a missile test off a group of Russian-held, Japanese-claimed islands amid an intensifying row over the disputed territory following President Vladimir Putin’s first-ever visit there last week.
While it was unclear exactly when the test was carried out, the announcement comes after the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Japanese Ambassador to Russia Akira Muto over Japan’s protest against Putin’s trip to the area.
Putin visited Etorofu Island, the largest of the four islands collectively called the Northern Territories by Japan and the Southern Kurils by Russia, on Aug. 13.
The naval fleet said a unit equipped with the Bastion surface-to-ship missile system conducted the test. The system is deployed to Etorofu.
The guided missile cruiser Varyag, the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, also took part in the missile test along with the Omsk nuclear-powered submarine, the fleet said.

The test simulated an attack on enemy vessels and succeeded in hitting all the intended targets at a range of at least 300 kilometers, according to the fleet.
“We cannot tolerate moves (by Russia) to strengthen military power on the four northern islands because they go against our country’s stance (on the territories),” Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi told reporters Thursday during his visit to Oman.
A senior ministry official revealed Friday that Japan had lodged a protest with Russia shortly after Moscow notified Tokyo that it would conduct the missile exercise during the week beginning last Sunday.
Japan says the islands, which also include Kunashiri, Shikotan and the Habomai islet group, were illegally seized by the Soviet Union soon after Japan’s surrender in World War II on Aug. 15, 1945. Russia claims the action was legitimate, saying the islands became part of its territory as a result of the war.
Ties between Japan and Russia have been strained since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which prompted Japan and its Group of Seven peers to impose sanctions on Moscow.

Japan has criticised missile tests carried out by Russia’s navy around the disputed islands visited by Vladimir Putin last week amid continuing tensions between the two countries.
Russia’s Pacific fleet said on Thursday that it had fired Bastion surface-to-ship missiles from Etorofu, the largest island in the disputed archipelago, simulating an attack on enemy vessels, hitting all of its targets approximately 300km away.
Officials said the drills included a nuclear-powered submarine and a guided-missile cruiser, according to reports.
Putin sparked a tit-for-tat summoning of ambassadors in Tokyo and Moscow with his first visit last week to Etorofu, the largest of the group of four islands. They are referred to as the Northern Territories or Four Northern Islands in Japan, and as part of the Kuril Islands in Russia.
Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan’s foreign minister, said on Thursday during a trip to Oman: “We cannot tolerate moves to strengthen military power on the Four Northern Islands because they go against our country’s stance [on the territories].”
Territorial rows over the islands go back to the 19th century. The Soviet Union seized them from Japan at the end of the second world war.
Exercises by the Russian fleet began on 4 August and Japan was informed in advance that they would include live-fire drills. Japan lodged a protest against the large-scale manoeuvres on 5 August.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, the drills involved “approximately 60 surface ships, submarines, and support vessels, about 30 aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems of the Pacific fleet’s naval aviation, as well as over 13,000 service members”.
Putin observed some of the exercises from the Varyag on 12 August as part of his trip to the disputed islands and to Sakhalin, the large undisputedly Russian island north of Hokkaido.
“The region is unfortunately becoming increasingly prone to conflict, with Nato seeking to gain a foothold here and the emergence of new military and political blocs,” said Putin, speaking aboard the flagship. “There are efforts and plans to deploy new weapons systems here, which creates threats for our country.”
The Russian drills are scheduled to continue through 29 August.
