Despite her highly academic background in the Oil Painting Department at Tokyo University of the Arts, the true driving force behind her work — her sensual audacity — stems from the spirit and frenzy of Tokyo’s nocturnal club culture and its never-sleeping underground scene.
The defining energy of this exhibition is the intense aura radiating from a ‘sisterly bond’ — a practice of radical liberation and freedom within the contemporary art scene.
The act of transforming one’s own body and loving — by one’s own volition — has crystallized into a ‘grunge’ aesthetic that is at once scarred yet noble.
