The Chinese leader also said “Taiwan independence” and cross-strait peace are “as irreconcilable as fire and water,” the ministry said.
Liang Wen-chieh, deputy head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, said at a separate news conference that the broad consensus on the island is to maintain the status quo and China’s attempt to undermine it is “the greatest risk” to the Taiwan Strait at present.
“If all parties truly value peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, then China should first restrain its military intimidation toward Taiwan,” he said. China regularly sends its military vessels and warplanes near the island. The Communist-led mainland views the democratic territory as a renegade province to be brought under its control by force if necessary.
In Europe, there is understanding for Germany’s reluctance to become a military power. For decades, arms manufacturers were ostracized, and strategic thinking was not a German strength. But in the fifth year of this ‘Period of Transformation’, greater sovereignty is needed – including in communication with neighbors who rightly question what role they should play alongside Germany.
