This was a career highlight: reviewing a documentary about two of the most important art critics of the last 40 years, and getting to meet my hero Roberta Smith on top of it.

The House of Criticism (@voyeur_films) is so good, and I highly recommend it if you want insight into both Jerry (@jerrysaltz) and Roberta (@robertasmithnyc) and their approach to writing and their relationship.

Every Friday in art school I would buy The New York Times just to read Roberta’s review, to get a sense of what was happening in the art world in NYC and to wrap my head around someone whose mind works on so many levels. I absorbed those essays in an effort to understand something I wasn’t quite sure of yet, and somehow I became an art journalist in New York City without ever intending to.

Roberta taught me to look more deeply and to look past things, trusting that if you stay with a work long enough, more will reveal itself. Getting to tell her that in person was pretty special.
