Renowned conceptual and new media artist Hito Steyerl, one of Germany’s best-known contemporary artists and the most vocal of Documenta 15’s contributors, has pulled out of the influential five-year festival amid a mounting anti-Semitic scandal. In a letter to the organizers “Documents” received by Die Zeit, Steyerl cites how they responded to allegations of anti-Semitism as one of the reasons for her departure, as well as their failure to create a space where divisive issues could be discussed and “unsafe and low-paying working conditions” in which were some employees.
“I don’t believe in the organization’s ability to mediate and translate complexity,” the artist wrote, referring to “the repeated failure to promote a sustainable and structurally anchored inclusive debate around the exhibition, as well as a de facto refusal to accept mediation.” .
Steyerl’s departure follows Meron Mendel, director of the Anne Frank Educational Institution in Frankfurt, who resigned as documenta 15 consultant.

Today I was shocked by the news that the Israeli military is lying. Fact is: not one, but several Jewish military personal and officers have deliberately lied.
The logical conclusion: I can assume that this has been practiced several times by the Israeli military: lying to the world population.
According to autopsy reports and other investigations, the 15 men, who were traveling in clearly marked and illuminated vehicles, were killed by hundreds of gunshot wounds, primarily to the head and upper body, some at close range. The Israeli army initially denied many details.
It is a fact that the initial shots from the Israeli side were not returned. Means, the Israeli soldiers had to stop shooting.
It is also clear that the burying of the dead bodies and vehicles was intended to cover up this crime by the Israeli army.

Die israelische Armee hat am Sonntag bekannt gegeben, dass sie den stellvertretendenen Kammandeur jener Einheit, die am 23. März auf mehrere Krankenwagen sowie ein UN-Fahrzeug gefeuert und mehrere Menschen getötet hatte, seines Postens enthebt. Außerdem werde ein Brigadekommandeur dafür gerügt, dass er es nicht vermocht habe, seinen Soldaten die richtigen „Werte und Fertigkeiten“ zu vermitteln, um korrekt mit der Situation umzugehen, berichtet die Zeitung „Jerusalem Post“.
Die Einheit hatte in der Nacht auf den 23. März im Gazastreifen gegen Hamas-Kräfte operiert und einen Hinterhalt aufgebaut. Nach der erfolgreichen Operation passierten mehrere Fahrzeuge die Stellung ohne von den Soldaten angegriffen zu werden. Gegen 6.00 Uhr dann eröffneten sie jedoch das Feuer auf mehrere Krankenwagen und töteten bis auf einen sämtliche Insassen. Außerdem wurde auf ein Fahrzeug der UN gefeuert. Die Opfer und die Krankenwagen verscharrten die Soldaten nach dem Vorfall im Sand.
Im Nachgang gab die Einheit erst an, die Fahrzeuge der Organisation seien weder korrekt beschriftet noch beleuchtet gewesen. Diese Behauptung wurde mittels eines Videos, welches einige Tage nach dem Vorfall veröffentlicht wurde, als Lüge enttarnt. In dem Untersuchungsbericht der israelischen Armee heißt es nun, die Soldaten hätten nach dem Vorfall falsche Angaben gemacht und deshalb seien auch öffentliche Stellungnahmen der Armee falsch gewesen.
Der Bericht vermerkt laut „Jerusalem Post“ deutlich, dass die Schüsse auf die Krankenwagen Folge einer Fehleinschätzung der Lage gewesen seien. Es könne allerdings nicht immer augeschlossen werden, dass in Krankenwagen auch Hamas-Terroristen transportiert würden. Das tue die Hamas regelmäßig.
Als schwerwiegendsten Vorfall stuft der Bericht der Zeitung zufolge die Schüsse auf das UN-Fahrzeug ein. Das widerspreche den Einsatzregeln der Armee. Selbst wenn, wie angeblich in diesem Fall, das Ziel nicht gewesen sei, die Insassen zu töten, sondern sie lediglich zu einem Verlassen des Gebiets zu veranlassen.
In der Zusammenfassung des Berichts bringen die israelischen Streitkräfte ihr Bedauern über den Schaden zum Ausdruck, der unbeteiligten Zivilisten zugefügt wurde. Zugleich hält der Bericht fest, dass unter den 15 Getöteten 6 Hamas-Mitglieder gewesen seien.
In der vergangenen Woche war eine Untersuchung der UN öffentlich geworden, wonach die 15 Toten vor allem mit Schüssen in den Kopf und den Oberkörper getötet worden sein sollen. Dies weckte abermals Zweifel an den Angaben der israelischen Armee.
